Garden Planning for 2021

Starting garlic chives

Last year, in the epic 2020 self-quarantining world of sour dough starters and urban gardening, I chose to go with a small herb garden. While my mother seemed to have a green thumb, I had more of a brown or black one. In my early/mid 20s, I had an amaryllis flower that bloomed once and stayed dormant for the rest of its life, and I somehow managed to kill a bamboo plant.

Keeping my plant growing history in mind, I decided to start small and easy - parsley, oregano, thyme, rosemary, garlic chives, sweet mint and peppermint! For my husband, we started a few jalapeno and habanero peppers. Everything started off well. However, I learned a hard lesson that “full sun” does not necessarily mean “full Utah sun”. All my herbs fried! The peppers were slow starters, but we ended up with a small bowl of tiny pepper, which we slow roasted in the oven.

For 2021, I decided to try a small herb garden again. All of the previous year’s, along with different types of lavender, spearmint, lemongrass, habanada, and the Armageddon hybrid. In addition to my herbs, I decided to try my luck with tomatoes! I couldn’t narrow down my selection and ended up choosing a large variety. I’m sure I’ll end up with more tomatoes than I’ll know what to do with!
